Aang is excited about going home for the first time in one hundred years, but he is shocked to find out that the temple is deserted. Aang tells Sokka and Katara about his childhood as they explore the temple, but they soon discover something that Aang never expected. Meanwhile, Prince Zuko must make repairs to his ship and the only way he can do it is to dock his ship at his rival’s naval base.
Aang, Katara, and Sokka arrive at Aang's home, The Southern Air Temple, located on top of the Patalla mountain range. Katara and Sokka see a firebenders' helmet, which Sokka wants to show to Aang. However, Katara waterbends a pile of snow on top of the helmet (and Sokka) before Aang can see it. When Aang is gone, Sokka says "You can't keep protecting him forever, you know" Aang enters a sanctuary and sees statues of all the past Avatars, and recalls his past. Meanwhile, Prince Zuko goes to Commander Zhao's harbor to repair his ship, which leads to Commander Zhao finding out that the Avatar is alive, and Prince Zuko challenging him to an Angi-Kai. Back at the Southern Air Temple, Sokka and Aang chase a flying lemur until Aang is devastated the dead body of his old master and fatherly figure, Monk Gyatso, among the bodies of Fire Nation Soldiers. Aang unleashes his rage through his Avatar Spirit and this action warns all the nations of the Avatar's return. Katara calms Aang by telling him that she and Sokka are his family now and he shouldn't feel alone. They continue on with their new lemur friend "Momo" in tow. Then later on, Prince Zuko fights Commander Zhao and defeats him. As he turns away, Zhao releases a stream of fire that Iroh stops. Telling him that Zuko is more honorable even in exile, the two leave.
