While traveling towards the North Pole, the group almost gets captured by the Fire Nation. When a charismatic young man and his band of rebels attack the Fire Nation camp and rescue them, Aang and his friends learn they are trying to resist the Fire Nation’s motives of expanding their territory. Katara and Aang enjoy their time with the band of rebels, but Sokka soon discovers that they aren’t as noble as meets the eye.
Aang, Katara, and Sokka are lost in the woods, due to Sokka's "instincts." Aang and Katara start teasing him. They wind up in a Fire Nation campsite, where they are harassed by the camping Firebenders. They are rescued by Jet, a young warrior with tribes of children living in the trees of an Earth Kingdom forest. Katara instantly falls in love with Jet at first sight. Katara even makes a hat for him (which ends up on Aang's head).
But, one morning while out with Jet, Sokka witnesses Jet and some of his friends harassing an old man. When Sokka tries to explain what had happened in the forest that morning to Aang and Katara, Jet fibs that the old man had a knife hidden on him, that the knife was filled with poison and the man had been planning on killing them all. As evidence, Jet takes out the knife, but Sokka believes that there was no knife and that the knife belonged to Jet.
Jet sends Aang and Katara to bend underground water from spouts into a stream, lying that the fire nation is planning to burn down the forest, and if they fill up the stream they can fight the fires. But, he was really planning to flood the Earth Kingdom town by blowing up a dam - and drown all the citizens, the guilty and the innocent. Meanwhile, Sokka had stalked Jet and was watching him explain his plans to a younger member of his group, when two members (Pipsqueak and Smellerbee) caught him and revealed him to Jet. Jet told the two to take Sokka out to the woods, telling him that he had thought that Sokka would be the only one understanding the "demands of war".
Jet's plan succeeds, but Sokka gets all the innocents out of town by tricking the two people with him into running into hunter's booby traps. At first, the villagers didn't believe Sokka was telling the truth about the flood, but the old man that Jet had harassed earlier believed him, and the two got everyone to safety. Katara, at the moment finds out what transpired, feels a mix of heart break and anger, and she freezes Jet to a tree. Sokka ends the episode by saying he proved that sometimes his instincts were right, but agrees that they can be wrong too when Aang points out that he's steering Appa south instead of north!
